The are a few different methods for making dread locks these are the method we think are the most effective:

Backcombing Dread locks
Necessary Products

  • dread locks wax
  • residue free dread locks shampoo
  • metal comb
  • rubberbands
  • hair clips
  • Locking Accelerator
  • Lock Peppa

The backcombing method can be used by anyone and with any hair type.

Instructions for making dread locks

  1. Wash your hair with your residue free dread locks shampoo.
  2. Decide how big you want your sections to be. The smaller your sections are the more dread locks you are going to have. I always recommend making sections 1"x1". If you want a lot of small dread locks you should make your sections .5"x.5". And if you want large dread locks you should make your sections 1.5"x1.5", but no larger than 2"x2". You will use the rubberbands to hold the sections in place, and you can use hair clips to hold large sections out of your way.
  3. After the sectioning is complete you can start backcombing, everyone everywhere says start in the back because if you do make a mistake it is covered up. So start in the back and go forward. Backcombing is like teasing hair, you make a lot of quick short strokes and after it builds up it becomes a dread locks. For backcombing videos you can go to this page. If you want to speed up the dread locks locking process use the Locking Accelerator before backcombing, after it dries you can start the backcombing. If you want to speed up the backcombing process and make dread locks maintenance more effective and easier, use the Lock Peppa. It cuts down on backcombing time.
  4. After the backcombing is complete you should put a rubberband on the top of each of the dread locks, called the root, and one at the end of each of the dread locks, called the tip. Then add your dread locks wax. Follow these steps over and over again on each section and when you have no more sections left you will have a complete head of dread locks.

Twisting Dread locks
Necessary Products

  • dread loc cream
  • residue free dread locs shampoo
  • rubberbands
  • clips

The twisting method is a good method for people who have extremely textured hair. The reason is because highly textured hair follicles are open and they lock onto other follicles when they are twisted together.

  1. Wash your hair with your residue free dread locks shampoo.
  2. Decide how big you want the sections of your dread locks to be. The smaller your sections are the more dread locks you are going to have. I always recommend making sections 1"x1". You will use the rubberbands to hold the sections in place, and you can use hair clips to hold large sections out of your way.
  3. Once your sectioning is complete you should twist each section and apply locs cream to each one of your dread locks. Once you have completed your whole head you will need to twist the locs everyday as often as you can, the more you twist the faster your locs will lock up.
